What are occasional invaders?

Occasional invaders are pests that, throughout the year, find a way into our Texas homes. In most cases, these pests are not harmful, but their presence is annoying, and no insect, no matter how harmless they may be, belongs living inside our homes.

Texas and its warm, humid weather allow many different types of insects to thrive. Occasional invaders that call our region home include:

  • Earwigs

  • Silverfish

  • Beetles

  • Boxelder bugs

  • Sowbugs

  • Springtails

Are occasional invaders dangerous?

Occasional invaders are not generally dangerous; some may have the ability to bite or pinch, but physical harm caused by these pests is not a significant concern. After finding a way into a home, they will move over its surfaces, spreading bacteria, and they may feed on and damage things like fabrics and pantry items. While occasional invaders aren’t something you need to run away from and fear, it is also not necessary or desirable to live with these pests for any period of time.

Why do I have an occasional invader problem?

The most common reason that occasional invaders become a problem in our houses is that they are trying to escape harsh weather conditions. Occasional invaders typically live outside until there is a lack of food, too much rain, or temperatures that become too hot or cold. Our yards often provide the perfect outdoor habitats, putting them close to our homes and allowing them to move indoors through spaces they discover in its exterior easily.

Common entry points that occasional invaders use include cracks in the foundation, spaces under doors, openings around utilities, vents, and damaged door trim.

In addition to moving inside on their own, these pests also hitchhike into structures. They move inside boxes, potted plants, furniture, deliveries, and other items that have been brought inside from the outside.

Where will I find occasional invaders?

Places where occasional invaders make themselves at home in our Texas yards, include gardens, flower beds, under mulch, and under trash cans, compost, or potted plants.

Once indoors, they move to damp, dark areas that mimic their outdoor living conditions, making our kitchens, bathrooms, and crawl spaces most susceptible to infestation. Some of their favorite indoor hideouts include:

  • Under sinks, near tubs and showers

  • Under pieces of upholstered furniture

  • Inside folded bedding or linens

  • Inside boxes or areas of clutter

  • Under rugs
