Early Detection And Removal Of Aerial Nests

If a paper wasp visits your yard in the spring and starts creating a nest, you can easily remedy this problem. Here are a few things to consider:

• Do inspections in the spring to catch nests early.
• Look for these starter nests in sheltered locations or stuck to the sides of structures.
• A starter nest will be shaped like an umbrella and you will see the catacombs inside.
• Remove the starter nest in the daytime. Wasps are diurnal insects.
• Examine the nest from a distance and make sure there are no wasps on the nest. 
• Use a broom to sweep the nest down and then move briskly out of the area.

Removal Of Established Aerial Nests

If you have a nest with lots of wasps climbing on it, or the nest is fully formed, we do not recommend removing it yourself. Social wasps and hornets have a nest-protection instinct. At the first sign of trouble, the drones will begin to give off a pheromone scent that excites the other drones. Within seconds, you can find yourself being chased by a few dozen wasps. Some species get very agitated and will pursue you for long distances. They’ll also hover over water and wait for you to come up for air, so don’t ever jump into a pool to get away from them. If you attempt to spray a nest, paper wasps can zero in on you from a surprising distance. When they do, you’ll be running for cover. This can create a threat for you and for others. Removal Of A Void Nest

It is tricky to deal with a yellow jacket nest, even when it is first being created. Topical treatments are not going to address the issue. If a nest has been created inside a stored item and is within a storage area, it is even trickier. This type of nest will require the use of protective gear that prevents wasps from stinging through the fabric and guards the face and neck. A beekeeper’s outfit is the best choice. We don’t recommend attempting to remove a void nest even if you are able to procure a beekeeper’s outfit because sucking wasps up with a vacuum can lead to all kinds of problems when you go to dispose of the bag.
